Program Requirements
Key requirements for completing the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
Prerequisites
All students must ensure they have completed the necessary prerequisite courses prior to enrollment.
Proof of completion (e.g. transcript or report card) must be submitted during registration.
OSSD Requirements
To earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), students must complete a total of 30 credits, which include 18 compulsory credits and 12 optional credits.
Additional requirements include:
• 40 hours of community involvement activities
• Passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)
Community
Involvement
Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities as part of the diploma requirements.
These activities encourage civic responsibility and community engagement.
Ontario Student Transcript (OST)
The OST provides a comprehensive record of a student's overall achievement in high school.
It includes all successfully completed credit courses, along with grades and credits earned.
PLAR (Prior Learning
Assessment and Recognition)
PLAR is a formal evaluation and credit-granting process whereby students may obtain credits for prior learning.
This includes knowledge and skills acquired outside of the classroom context.
OSSLT
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects.
Successful completion is required
to earn the OSSD.
Applying to college or university
OUAC
The Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) is a centralized application service for admission to undergraduate programs at Ontario's universities.
Students looking to apply to a university in Ontario will process their applications through this system.
Note: Ensure all required documents and transcripts are submitted prior to specific university deadlines.
OCAS
The Ontario Colleges Application Service (OCAS) provides a centralized application processing service for applicants to Ontario public colleges.
Information regarding college programs and admissions can be found through their portal.
Reach Ahead
The Reach Ahead program allows Grade 8 students to earn high school credits before officially starting secondary school. This program is designed to provide academic challenges and ease the transition into high school.
Students can enroll in select Grade 9 courses, allowing them to lighten their future course load or explore electives sooner.
Approval from the student's current elementary school principal and parents/guardians is required to participate in this advanced learning opportunity.
